Government Hires Illegal Workers

It has been revealed that the Government has hired 349 illegal workers during the past four years.  It was found that the workers were given jobs in various Whitehall departments, the NHS, and even the Home Office itself.  This highlights how difficult it can be to keep track of the immigration status of employees, especially since permission to work in the UK can be withdrawn during the course of employment without the employers knowing.

In view of the potential £10,000 fine imposed if a business is found to be employing someone who does not have permission to work in the UK, it is essential to have a system in place whereby original paperwork is checked, copied, and kept on file on an annual basis.  Provided that these checks are carried out each year, the business is likely to have a defence against a fine in the worst case scenario.
