Recession Hits Disabled Employees

Research has revealed that 1 in 20 disabled employees were made redundant during the past year.  The research carried out by Leonard Cheshire Disability found that the gap between able bodied and disabled employees is growing due to a combination of being unfairly selected for redundancy, and being discriminated against in the recruitment process.

This is obviously extremely concerning for those striving to eliminate discrimination in the workplace, but is also worrying in view of the fact that compensation awards for successful discrimination claims are unlimited - meaning a claim can have catastrophic consequences.

Disability discrimination legislation extends to all areas of employment – from the job advertisement through to retirement. It is worth bearing in mind that the definition of disability for the purposes of employment law is very wide in scope, and includes mental health illness in some circumstances.
