Spotlight on Job Adverts

It is advisable to think carefully about job adverts, following the inflammatory job advert placed in Union Square shopping centre by American retailer Abercrombie & Fitch.

The famous chain of clothing stores sparked outrage, after placing a controversial job advert outside its store last week. The advert stating “We are looking for cool and good looking people to represent our brands” has caused outrage and upset in the North East.

Permanent Jobs Show Fastest Rise in 2 and a Half Years

The number of people placed into permanent jobs saw the greatest increase in two-and-a-half years last month, research has revealed.

The monthly Report on Jobs survey by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG found that the index for the number of permanent job placements rose to 63.2 in February – on a scale where 50 indicates no change – compared to 60.5 in January.

Slips, Trips & Falls Cost the UK Around £800m Per Year

Slip, trip and fall incidents in the workplace cost 40 workers their lives last year and cost society an estimated £800 million each year, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) warned this month as it launched a hard-hitting campaign.

HSE figures show that slips and trips are the most common cause of major workplace injury in Britain. More workplace deaths are triggered by falls from height than any other cause, according to official statistics.

Are you prepared for the new `Fit to Work` certificate?

In April 2010 we face mandatory new requirements and obligations in relation to all work absences which require GP certification.  This represents one of the most radical over-hauls of the system for a long while and is likely to cause greater uncertainty for employers and employees.  If Employers/ Managers are not prepared this could generate (avoidable) legal claims, confusion, lost time/ productivity, potential conflict, and possible H&S implications – especially if your current absence/ return to work procedures are not updated to account for these changes.
